Outriders Dev Grew Five Times Bigger For New Game

Outriders is one of the most ambitious games yet from Bulletstorm and Gears of War: Judgment developer People Can Fly, and its studio size grew to match the project as it ballooned. It had to move to a larger location as the studio grew five times in size.

In the recent issue of Game Informer, which features Outriders as the cover story, creative director Bartosz Kmita explained that publisher Square Enix helped push the project further than the studio had originally envisioned.

"The guys from Square would want to make this idea a little bit bigger, and little by little it grew to a lot bigger," Kmita said. "It was two things in parallel. One was the scope of the game, which grew, and the company had to grow too, to fulfill the needs we had for the production at that point."

To match the bigger scope, the studio grew from about 40 developers to more than 200 and had to move its offices to another location nearby.

Outriders uses familiar shooter mechanics and adds RPG elements, and the result is a mix of Gears of War and Mass Effect. It's slated for this holiday season on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It's also coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X.
