The truth behind hacking in Mr Robot

Hacking in both TV and film looks cool a lot of the time while being accurate almost none of the time. One of the brilliant exceptions to this rule is USA Network’s Mr. Robot.

Where movies like Swordfish or (lord help us) The Net present hacking as a race against some bizarre Tron puzzle while blasting music and drinking mega cans of Monster, Mr. Robot portrays hacking in a way that’s far more realistic and unsettling. How real? According to hackers like Jeff Moss aka The Dark Tangent and security expert Ryan Kazanciyan, pretty real.

Moss and Kazanciyan, along with Kor Adana (Writer/Technical Consultant for Mr. Robot) and numerous other experts discuss those realities in the upcoming Mr. Robot Decoded (official title: Mr. Robot_dec0d3d.doc), a one-hour special that speaks directly to the authenticity and societal impact of Mr. Robot.

Mr. Robot Decoded shares some of the events of Season 1 and takes a look at what’s coming in Season 2. Featuring commentary and interviews with Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail and cast members Rami Malek, Christian Slater, Portia Doubleday, and Carly Chaikin, there’s also a discussion about whether hackers can change the world and, if so, should they?

Interviewees also include Lance James (Chief Scientist, Flashpoint), Fred Kaplan (Author of Dark Territory: The Secret History Of Cyber War), Network Security Expert Peiter C. Zatko, actor Zachary Levi, as well as other writers, journalists, filmmakers, and high-profile experts.

If you’re not already watching Mr. Robot, I highly recommend it. It’s not often a show manages to scare the sh-t out of me by being too realistic. If you are, I think you’ll find Mr. Robot Decoded more than a little interesting.

Mr. Robot Decoded airs this Monday, June 20 at 11:05pm PT/ET on USA.
